Iker Casillas Opposes Jose Mourinho’s Potential Real Madrid Return

Iker Casillas has publicly opposed the reported return of Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid as the club enters negotiations with the Benfica manager.

Real Madrid is reportedly in final negotiations to appoint Jose Mourinho as head coach 13 years after his departure, as the club seeks to fill the vacancy left by Alvaro Arbeloa following a trophyless 2025/26 campaign. Despite the 63-year-old being viewed by president Florentino Perez as the disciplinarian needed to stabilise a fractured dressing room, club legend Iker Casillas has publicly voiced his opposition to the appointment. Mourinho is currently under contract at Benfica, but reports suggest his deal includes a €3 million release clause that becomes active for a 10-day window following the conclusion of the Portuguese season.

Casillas intervenes as Perez seeks a disciplinarian

The prospect of Mourinho’s return has reignited historical tensions within the Madridista community. Writing on X, former captain Iker Casillas stated that while he views Mourinho as a "great professional," he does not want him back at the Bernabeu, suggesting other coaches are better equipped to lead the club. The relationship between the two famously collapsed during the 2012/13 season when Mourinho benched the long-standing number one in favour of Antonio Adán and Diego López, a move that split the fan base. Casillas’ intervention carries weight as Perez prepares for new club elections following a season in which Madrid ceded the La Liga title to Barcelona and suffered a Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Mourinho’s Benfica situation and squad challenges

Mourinho has remained characteristically coy regarding the move, telling reporters that he has one year left on his Benfica contract and stating he would only address his future following the final match against Estoril. However, according to The Independent, negotiations are advanced as Madrid officials look to rectify a season defined by internal instability, including a reported physical altercation between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni. The squad requires a firm hand to succeed Arbeloa, who stepped up as interim after Xabi Alonso’s brief tenure ended earlier in 2026. If the move is finalised, it would mark Mourinho's second stint in the Spanish capital, where he previously delivered one league title and a Copa del Rey between 2010 and 2013.

Further developments are expected once the Portuguese Primeira Liga season concludes and the 10-day release clause window opens.
