Julian Alvarez has reportedly identified Paris Saint-Germain as his preferred destination, dealing a significant blow to Arsenal’s plans to bring the forward back to the Premier League. According to reports from Radio Marca and Cadena COPE, the 26-year-old Atletico Madrid attacker has prioritised a move to the French capital despite preliminary discussions between his representatives and Arsenal. Atletico, who signed the Argentine from Manchester City for a total package of €95 million (£82m) in 2024, are understood to have set a valuation of €150 million (£130m) to sanction a sale this summer.
Arteta’s tactical plan for Alvarez at Arsenal
While Alvarez is widely viewed as a central striker, Mikel Arteta reportedly envisioned a different role for him at the Emirates. As first reported by Goal, the Arsenal manager intended to deploy Alvarez on the left flank rather than in direct competition with Viktor Gyokeres, who joined the Gunners in 2025. This tactical pivot comes as Arsenal evaluate their options out wide; with Leandro Trossard approaching 32 and Gabriel Martinelli’s position under internal review, Alvarez was seen as a versatile solution capable of drifting inside. Having scored 49 goals in 106 appearances for Atletico, his clinical finishing from wide areas was a key attraction for the Premier League leaders.
Contractual hurdles and Atletico’s firm stance
The €150 million asking price reflects Alvarez’s long-term security at the Metropolitano, where he is under contract until June 2030. Atletico Madrid are in a strong negotiating position and have no immediate pressure to sell, especially given the player’s high output since arriving from Manchester. However, the potential departure of Antoine Griezmann and Atletico’s recent lack of silverware are thought to be factors behind the player considering his future. Speaking to reporters recently via The Mirror, Alvarez remained diplomatic: “I’m focused on the day-to-day, working to improve and give my all. I never said anything bad about the club. I’m very grateful.”
PSG are now expected to formalise their interest as they look to further reshape their attack in the post-Mbappe era.
