Liverpool Consider Arne Slot Exit As Andoni Iraola Emerges As Primary Target

Liverpool hierarchy are discussing Arne Slot's future following a 19-loss season, with Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola identified as a potential replacement.

Liverpool high command, led by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, are internally debating the future of head coach Arne Slot following a severe regression in the 2025/26 campaign. Despite winning the Premier League title in his debut season, Slot’s position is under scrutiny after 19 defeats across all competitions and public tactical criticism from talisman Mohamed Salah. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, 43, is understood to be the leading candidate to replace the Dutchman if Fenway Sports Group (FSG) decides to sanction a change, according to reports from TeamTalk and Football365.

Tactical friction and the Iraola connection

The pressure on Slot intensified after a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa on May 15, which prompted Mohamed Salah to post social media comments calling for a return to the “heavy metal” identity established under Jurgen Klopp. Speaking to media at the AXA Training Centre, Salah stated that the club must return to being an "attacking team that opponents fear," noting that this is the identity that needs to be "kept for good." This internal friction coincides with Andoni Iraola’s confirmed departure from Bournemouth at the end of the season. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has a documented history with Iraola, having been the figure responsible for bringing the Spaniard to the south coast in 2023. While Slot told the Independent on May 14 that he has "every reason to believe" he will remain in his post, the hierarchy is reportedly alarmed by the lack of return on a £450m squad investment.

Competition and a narrowing shortlist

Liverpool’s decision-making process is complicated by a crowded market and the recent loss of other targets. Xabi Alonso, long considered the natural successor to the Klopp era, has officially committed to a four-year deal with Chelsea, removing the primary alternative from the board. According to Empire of the Kop, Liverpool’s secondary shortlist includes Sebastian Hoeness of Stuttgart, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, and Matthias Jaissle. However, speed may be required regarding Iraola; three unnamed Bundesliga clubs are reportedly monitoring the Spaniard’s situation ahead of his Bournemouth exit. Liverpool currently face a squad transition with Salah’s contract reaching its final stages and a need for tactical alignment before the 2026 World Cup break disrupts the summer window.

The internal discussions at Melwood are expected to conclude shortly after the final match of the season to ensure a settled leadership structure for the upcoming transfer window.
