Liverpool Monitor Achraf Hakimi As PSG Contract Status Remains Under Spotlight

Liverpool and Manchester City are tracking PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi as a potential elite replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool and Manchester City are monitoring the situation of Achraf Hakimi as the Morocco international nears the final three years of his current deal at Paris Saint-Germain. Despite the 27-year-old right-back being tied to the Parc des Princes until June 2029, reports from TeamTalk suggest the Premier League duo are "attentive" to any friction in future negotiations. Hakimi, who became the world’s highest-paid full-back upon signing a contract extension in February 2025, remains a central figure for the Ligue 1 champions following their 2025 Champions League triumph, but his long-term future has become a point of interest for clubs seeking elite defensive reinforcements.

Liverpool’s search for defensive contingencies

The interest from Anfield is primarily rooted in the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold. With the England international’s future frequently debated amid interest from Real Madrid, Liverpool recruitment staff have identified Hakimi as a high-calibre alternative. This vetting process also includes Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, who possesses a £33m release clause. However, Hakimi represents a significantly more expensive operation. His February 2025 extension carries a net annual salary of approximately €14m (£11.6m), a figure that translates to roughly €28m gross. This wage bracket sits above the typical salary structure for defensive players at Liverpool, where financial discipline is strictly maintained under the FSG ownership model.

PSG’s stance and Hakimi’s current position

While Hakimi jokingly called for another new contract following his 200th appearance for PSG in April 2026, the French side remains in a position of strength. Sporting director Luis Campos and president Nasser Al-Khelaifi have prioritised Hakimi as a cornerstone of the post-Kylian Mbappé era, bolstered by the financial freedom gained from the forward's 2024 departure. Since scoring the opening goal in the 2025 Champions League final victory over Inter Milan, Hakimi’s valuation has only increased. "We have more confidence," Hakimi noted in a recent interview, reflecting on PSG's status as European champions. Any move by Liverpool or Manchester City would require breaking the world-record fee for a defender, currently held by Josko Gvardiol, to even begin formal discussions with the Parisian hierarchy.

The situation is expected to remain exploratory until the summer transfer window, as Hakimi recovers from a thigh injury sustained in late April.
