Liverpool Monitor Emiliano Martínez As Alisson Becker Nears Juventus Exit

Liverpool are weighing up a move for Aston Villa's Emiliano Martínez as Alisson Becker reportedly agrees personal terms for a three-year deal with Juventus.

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, 33, as a replacement for Alisson Becker, who is understood to have agreed personal terms on a move to Juventus. According to reports in Italy from TuttoJuve, Alisson has reached a preliminary agreement on a three-year contract worth €15 million in total to join the Serie A side this summer. To facilitate a wider squad overhaul, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are also in talks with the agents of Atalanta midfielder Éderson, valued at €50 million (£43.2m), as the club prepares for a significant transition in their defensive spine.

The battle to replace Alisson Becker

The move for Martínez comes amid growing uncertainty within the Liverpool hierarchy regarding their current goalkeeping depth. While Giorgi Mamardashvili joined the club for €30 million from Valencia, reports from The Hard Tackle suggest the Georgian has yet to fully convince club officials during Alisson’s recent injury spells. This follows the 2025 sale of long-term backup Caoimhín Kelleher to Brentford for a fee potentially rising to £18 million, a departure the club is understood to regret. Martínez’s agent, Gustavo Goñi, described the Argentine as "the best in the world" in a recent interview, noting that few clubs could afford his services. However, any deal will be complex; Martínez signed a contract extension at Villa Park in August 2024 that runs until June 2029, and Unai Emery’s side will likely demand a significant premium for their captain.

FSG planning mid-term squad revolution

Liverpool’s interest in Martínez and Éderson indicates a shift toward proven top-tier talent to support manager Arne Slot’s second season. Data from SciSports suggests the goalkeeping department has transitioned from a position of strength to a statistical vulnerability, with none of the current senior options ranking among the squad's top performers this term. The pursuit of Éderson at €50 million further suggests FSG is willing to spend to rectify central defensive concerns. Despite Alisson having his contract extended to 2027 earlier this year to protect his market value, the Brazilian is reportedly intrigued by a fresh challenge in Turin. With Mamardashvili struggling for consistency, Liverpool require an immediate elite-level starter rather than a developmental prospect, making Martínez the primary target despite his age and the lengthy contract remaining at Villa.

Negotiations are expected to intensify as Juventus look to finalise the Alisson deal before the start of pre-season training.
