Liverpool Progress Stalled In Ibrahima Konate Contract Talks Over Financial Structure

Contract talks between Liverpool and Ibrahima Konate are stalled over signing-on fees and commissions, despite an agreement in principle on personal terms.

Liverpool and Ibrahima Konate have reached an agreement in principle regarding salary and contract length, but a final resolution is being delayed by disputes over the deal's structure. According to a report from TEAMtalk, negotiations for the 26-year-old French international are currently deadlocked by disagreements over the signing-on package and associated agent commissions. While Konate is understood to be seeking a significant increase to approximately £200,000 per week to join the club’s highest earners, the impasse remains focused on the peripheral financial terms rather than the base wage.

Negotiation tension and Real Madrid interest

The defender’s current deal expires on 30 June 2026, placing Liverpool in a precarious position as he enters the final 12 months of his contract. In an interview with French media, Konate attempted to de-escalate the situation, stating that the parties were "close to an agreement" and that he intended to remain at Anfield. However, the lack of a signed document has allowed Real Madrid to monitor the situation, as reported by Liverpool.com. The Spanish giants previously secured Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer from Merseyside and are considered the primary suitors should Liverpool fail to find a breakthrough before the January window. In a press conference appearance, Konate alluded to his private discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes, suggesting his eventual explanation for the delay would "make everyone quiet."

Konate’s role in Liverpool’s defensive succession

Retaining Konate is a strategic necessity for Arne Slot following the confirmed departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson in 2026. Having played over 4,000 minutes in the 2025/26 campaign, Konate has established himself as the undisputed partner to Virgil van Dijk. The significance of this extension is heightened by Van Dijk’s own age; the club captain will turn 35 in July 2026 and enters the final year of his deal in 2027. Liverpool have already integrated younger profiles such as Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni, but Konate is viewed as the bridge to the post-Van Dijk era. Securing his prime years at a £200,000-a-week valuation would align him with the internal wage structure established for critical first-team pillars.

The club now faces a deadline of the 2026 pre-season to formalise the agreement or risk a cut-price sale to avoid a repeat of the Alexander-Arnold exit.
