Liverpool Pursue Lutsharel Geertruida Move As Sunderland Decline Buy Option

Liverpool are set to move for RB Leipzig's Lutsharel Geertruida after Sunderland opted against a permanent £20m transfer for the versatile Dutch defender.

Liverpool are positioned to secure RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida for approximately £20 million this summer after Sunderland declined to activate their purchase option at the conclusion of his season-long loan. The 25-year-old, who is understood to be a priority target for head coach Arne Slot following their successful period together at Feyenoord, saw a potential move to Anfield stall in January when the Wearside club blocked a mid-season exit. With the loan agreement now concluded and the player due to return to Germany, the path is clear for Liverpool to reunite the versatile Dutch international with his former manager.

The Slot connection and tactical fit

Geertruida’s familiarity with Slot’s system remains the primary driver behind Liverpool's interest. During their tenures in Rotterdam, the pair secured the Eredivisie title in 2022-23 and the KNVB Cup the following year. Speaking to De Telegraaf, journalist Valentijn Driessen noted that Slot's previous experience with the player makes the move logical, stating: "Arne Slot wanted him. Because Geertruida can play in various positions... with a coach like Slot, that it will work." His ability to operate at right-back, centre-back, and defensive midfield aligns with the tactical flexibility Slot demands, particularly in a system requiring full-backs to invert into central areas during build-up play—a role Geertruida mastered at Feyenoord.

Squad rationale and market valuation

While Geertruida remains under contract at RB Leipzig until June 2029, the £20 million valuation represents an attainable figure for a player with established European pedigree and Premier League adaptivity. Liverpool’s pursuit comes amid a broader defensive transition following the departures of Joel Matip and the ongoing uncertainty regarding long-term depth at right-back. Marcel van der Kraan of De Telegraaf described Geertruida as the feyenoord graduate who "physically fits the Premier League best," suggesting his year at Sunderland has provided the necessary acclimation to English football. For Liverpool, the deal provides a low-risk solution to multiple squad vacancies without the premium usually associated with top-tier Bundesliga talent.

Negotiations are expected to progress rapidly as Liverpool look to finalise their defensive rotations before the start of pre-season.
