Sweden international midfielder Lucas Bergvall has signed a new contract extension with Tottenham Hotspur. The announcement marks a significant turn of events for the 20-year-old, who had requested a transfer away from the north London club during the summer window due to limited playing time.
Bergvall signed for Tottenham from Djurgarden in February 2024 before officially completing his transfer on July 1, 2024, in a deal worth £8.5 million. He has since made 80 appearances for the club in all competitions. However, his future became uncertain at the end of last season following the arrival of manager Roberto De Zerbi. The summer arrivals of midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali further intensified competition for places, prompting Bergvall to explore options elsewhere.
Despite his initial desire to leave, Tottenham were determined to retain the midfielder. During the summer transfer window, Spurs rejected a £38 million bid from Nottingham Forest, while Aston Villa and Chelsea also registered interest. Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea made inquiries on Deadline Day to understand the situation, though no formal bid was submitted as Spurs stood firm on keeping the player.
According to the BBC, Bergvall has featured for 45 minutes in the Premier League so far this season, but head coach Roberto De Zerbi has publicly backed the youngster's long-term future. "I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential," De Zerbi said. The manager acknowledged the strong competition from the likes of Sandro Tonali, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Conor Gallagher, but expressed confidence that Bergvall will play a significant role as the season progresses.
Reflecting on his decision to extend his stay, Bergvall expressed his excitement for the future. "I think we're building something great here," the Swedish international stated. "It's an exciting time for the club and that's why I'm happy to extend my contract."
