Manchester Clubs Battle For Elliot Anderson As Nottingham Forest Prepare Primary Sale

Manchester City and Manchester United are bidding for Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson as the club looks to balance books while keeping Morgan Gibbs-White.

Nottingham Forest are reportedly resigned to losing Elliot Anderson this summer to satisfy financial requirements, with Manchester City and Manchester United competing for the 23-year-old midfielder's signature. According to TeamTalk, the Forest hierarchy has prioritised retaining captain Morgan Gibbs-White, 26, over Anderson, who is valued between £65 million and £120 million. Manchester City are understood to be in pole position for a deal, as reported by The Mirror, while manager Vitor Pereira has admitted he cannot guarantee the player will remain at the City Ground for the 2026/27 campaign.

Nottingham Forest’s PSR Strategy and Anderson's Valuation

Forest’s transfer activity remains heavily dictated by their proximity to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limits, following a four-point deduction for a breach in March 2024. Having signed Anderson from Newcastle for approximately £35 million in July 2024, the club stands to make a significant accounting profit that would bolster their fiscal standing. Transfer correspondent Ben Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, noted that "now is the right time" for the Manchester clubs to test Forest’s resolve. The discrepancy in reported fees—ranging from £65 million to a potential £120 million package—suggests Forest are banking on a bidding war between the local rivals to maximise the return on one of their most valuable assets.

Squad Impact and the Gibbs-White Factor

While interest in Gibbs-White from Tottenham and Manchester United persists, Forest’s negotiating position was recently strengthened by the midfielder signing a contract extension until 2028. This deal reportedly removed an existing release clause, allowing the club to focus sales efforts on Anderson. Tactically, Anderson has become indispensable to Pereira’s system, which recently led the club to a Europa League semi-final. Forest defender Ola Aina, speaking to GiveMeSport, described Anderson as a player the squad “looks to” in difficult situations. Manchester City view the 23-year-old as a versatile option for Pep Guardiola’s evolving midfield, while United have identified him as a high-ceiling target capable of operating in the advanced roles currently occupied by an ageing Bruno Fernandes.

Negotiations are expected to accelerate following the conclusion of the domestic season as Forest look to formalise their compliance with league financial regulations.
