Manchester United Braced For Marcus Rashford Return As Barcelona Buyout Talks Stall

Marcus Rashford faces an uncertain future as Barcelona's financial constraints threaten a permanent move, potentially forcing a return to Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford is expected to return to Manchester United this summer as FC Barcelona struggle to meet the €30 million (£26 million) purchase option included in his loan agreement. The 28-year-old forward has spent the 2025/26 campaign at the Camp Nou, where he has recorded 13 goals and 13 assists in 45 appearances. Despite the player's public admission to BeIN Sports that his "ultimate goal" is to remain in Spain, a financial impasse between the two clubs has made a permanent transfer increasingly unlikely.

The €30m valuation gap

According to reports from Sky Sports, Barcelona officials are eager to retain Rashford but prefer to negotiate a second season-long loan rather than triggering the existing €30m buyout clause. Manchester United, however, are understood to be demanding the full fee as they look to navigate Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Football365 reports that the United hierarchy, led by INEOS, has shown no intention of facilitating a secondary loan, viewing a clean sale as the only viable exit route. With Rashford currently earning £325,000-a-week on a contract that runs until June 2028, his wage packet remains a significant hurdle for the Catalan club's restricted budget.

Squad roles and tactical fit

While Rashford has found consistency in La Liga, his role under Hansi Flick has largely been that of a high-level rotation option. Speaking on the Mirror, Paul Scholes noted that the academy graduate will "only ever be back-up to Raphinha and Yamal" at Barcelona, suggesting a move to a club like Aston Villa might better serve his career if he seeks guaranteed starts. Conversely, former England winger Chris Waddle told FootballTransfers that Rashford remains a "huge asset" for United. Waddle suggested that a fresh start under the current Old Trafford setup could revitalise the forward, who originally left Manchester following a sharp decline in form. With Bayern Munich reportedly pivoting towards Anthony Gordon, the list of alternative elite suitors for Rashford has narrowed, making an Old Trafford return the most probable outcome if Barcelona cannot find the requisite funds.

The situation now rests on whether Barcelona can offload existing squad members to finance the permanent deal before the loan expiry in June.
