Manchester United Eye £51M Arda Guler Move Amid Real Madrid Coaching Reshuffle

Manchester United are reportedly preparing a €60m bid for Real Madrid’s Arda Guler as reports emerge of Jose Mourinho’s impending return to the Bernabeu.

Manchester United have accelerated initial contacts to sign Arda Guler from Real Madrid as the Spanish giants reportedly prepare for a significant managerial change. According to reports in Turkey and Spain, United are ready to lodge a €60 million (£51.2 million) bid for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, whose future at the Bernabeu has been plunged into uncertainty following claims that Jose Mourinho has agreed to return as manager on a two-year contract. While Real Madrid recently rejected an €80 million offer from the Saudi Pro League, citing Guler as untouchable, the potential shift in tactical philosophy under Mourinho may provide an opening for the Premier League side to secure the Turkish international.

United’s tactical rationale and squad needs

The pursuit of Guler aligns with Manchester United's effort to increase creative output for striker Rasmus Hojlund. United’s interest follows a season marked by inconsistent chance creation, notably recording an xG as low as 0.72 in recent high-profile fixtures. Speaking to TeamTalk, former United striker Louis Saha noted that the club could offer Guler significantly more playing time than he currently receives in Madrid. The reported £51.2 million valuation draws a direct parallel to United's £55 million investment in Mason Mount, though Guler offers a more specialized profile as a right-sided playmaker. With his current contract running until June 2029, any deal would require United to convince Madrid that a sale is preferable to keeping a player who made 50 appearances this season under the current regime.

The Mourinho factor at Real Madrid

The catalyst for United's renewed interest is the reported agreement for Jose Mourinho to replace the current structure at Real Madrid at the end of the season. As first reported by Fanatik, Mourinho is expected to sign a 2+1 year deal, which has led to speculation regarding Guler’s fit within a characteristically disciplined Mourinho system. Although Madrid officials previously rebuffed interest from the Middle East, the Turkish outlet suggests that squad restructuring may follow Mourinho's appointment. This marks a shift from June 2024, when Mourinho, then at Fenerbahce, jokingly suggested a loan return for the player. If United formalise their bid, they will be testing a resolve that saw Madrid pay an initial €20 million plus €10 million in add-ons to sign Guler from Fenerbahce in July 2023.

Negotiations remain in the early stages, and any final decision will likely hinge on the formalisation of Real Madrid's managerial plans for the upcoming campaign.
