Manchester United Identify Aurélien Tchouaméni As New 'Dream' Midfield Target

Manchester United have reportedly identified Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni as their new 'dream' midfield target to upgrade their defensive pivot.

Manchester United have identified Aurélien Tchouaméni as their primary midfield target according to reports from Fabrizio Romano, as the club looks to upgrade the defensive anchor position in the summer of 2026. The 26-year-old Real Madrid midfielder is understood to be viewed internally as the successor to Casemiro's profile, though any potential deal with the Spanish champions would likely require a fee exceeding the £85m United committed to the Brazilian in 2022.

The evolution of United’s midfield search

The pursuit of Tchouaméni represents the latest stage in a prolonged search for a world-class defensive presence under the INEOS era. In June 2024, Romano cited João Neves (then 19) as United’s "dream target," but the club was ultimately priced out by Benfica’s €120m (£101m) release clause. PSG eventually secured Neves for an initial €60m plus add-ons by leveraging a loan deal for Renato Sanches. United pivoted to Manuel Ugarte (23), signing him from the Parisian club on 30 August 2024 for an initial £42.1m. While Ugarte offered defensive industry, the renewed focus on Tchouaméni suggests a desire for greater technical composure at the base of the midfield, mirroring the profile of elite controllers seen at Manchester City and Arsenal.

Potential obstacles and squad implications

Securing Tchouaméni would present significant financial and diplomatic challenges. Real Madrid have historically been reluctant to part with the Frenchman, who has been a regular fixture in Carlo Ancelotti’s rotations since his arrival from Monaco. Speaking via his media channels, Romano noted that while Tchouaméni is the "dream target" who could be "another Casemiro," United must remain realistic about the player’s availability. A move for the Madrid man would likely necessitate the departure of Ugarte, who has struggled to provide the same level of ball progression as his counterparts in the Premier League’s top four. With United’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) position remaining a factor, a deal of this magnitude would require significant outgoings to balance the books.

United are expected to monitor Tchouaméni’s situation throughout the 2025/26 campaign before deciding whether to formalise their interest in the summer window.
