Manchester United Plan £150M Midfield Overhaul As Carlos Baleba Talks Advance

Manchester United are planning a £150m midfield blitz this summer, targeting Brighton's Carlos Baleba and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali to lead a three-man overhaul.

Manchester United are preparing a £150 million investment to sign three new central midfielders during the summer 2026 transfer window, according to reports from the Daily Mail. The recruitment strategy, sanctioned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is led by an £80 million move for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, 22, who is the primary candidate to replace outgoing veteran Casemiro. The club has reportedly already reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with the Cameroon international as they move to modernise a squad that has secured a return to the Champions League under Michael Carrick.

Baleba leads three-man shortlist for United rebuild

The planned expenditure is structured to address specific tiers of the squad. According to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, £80 million has been earmarked for a marquee defensive specialist to anchor the midfield. While Baleba is the advanced target, Fabrizio Romano reports that Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali is also on the shortlist, though his valuation—cited between €90m and €110m—remains a significant obstacle. Should a deal for Baleba or Tonali prove difficult, Atalanta’s Ederson is viewed as a secondary option for approximately €40-45 million. The recruitment drive marks a strategic shift following a 2025 window where United spent roughly £200 million on attacking reinforcements Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.

Financial headroom and tactical rationale

United’s ability to commit £150 million to a single department is bolstered by the expected departure of high earners. Casemiro, who joined from Real Madrid for £60 million plus add-ons in 2022, is anticipated to leave upon the expiry of his contract. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte has reportedly been cleared for sale by the club’s leadership just one season after his arrival. This turnover, combined with the projected £100 million revenue boost from Champions League qualification, provides the necessary Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) headroom. To round out the trio, United are seeking a £40 million secondary option and a £20 million developmental player, with Southampton’s Shea Charles, 22, identified by OneFootball as a candidate for the latter role.

The club is expected to formalise its opening bid for Baleba once the Premier League season concludes and the summer window officially opens.
