Manchester United Progress Ederson Talks As €45M Verbal Offer Submitted

Manchester United have made a verbal offer for Atalanta's Ederson, with personal terms on a seven-year contract already agreed for the 26-year-old midfielder.

Manchester United have submitted a verbal offer of approximately €45m to €48m plus add-ons for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to reports from Spanish journalist Edu Burgos and Italian correspondent Nicolò Schira. The 26-year-old Brazilian has reportedly agreed personal terms on a seven-year contract at Old Trafford worth roughly €5m (£4.3m) net per year. While United look to finalise the deal to lead their midfield overhaul, Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi told local media that the club has yet to receive an official written bid, suggesting the Bergamo side may hold out for a total package closer to €60m.

Tactical rationale and the United midfield vacuum

Manager Michael Carrick has identified Ederson as the primary target to reshape a central unit likely to lose veteran presence Casemiro this summer. The Brazilian’s high-intensity, box-to-box profile is intended to complement Kobbie Mainoo, providing the defensive coverage and physical engine that Manuel Ugarte has struggled to consistently deliver since his move from Paris Saint-Germain. Ederson has been a fixture for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side since July 2022, and his exclusion from recent Atalanta lineups has further fuelled reports that a move to the Premier League is imminent. United’s pursuit follows a pattern of high-value business between the two clubs, following the successful recruitment of Rasmus Højlund for €75m and Amad Diallo.

Market competition and Atalanta's valuation

Atalanta’s bargaining position remains strong with the player under contract until June 2027, though United’s movement has reportedly moved them ahead of Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side previously reached an agreement with the player but failed to meet Atalanta's asking price. By offering a contract running until 2031, United are utilizing long-term amortisation to fit the deal within PSR constraints, mirroring recent market trends for players in their mid-20s. Despite the discrepancy between the reported €45m verbal opening and Atalanta's desired €60m ceiling, sources in Italy indicate the clubs are moving toward a compromise. This deal represents the first major midfield investment of the INEOS era, prioritising a proven Serie A performer to anchor Carrick’s tactical shift away from ageing high-earners.

Negotiations are expected to continue this week as both clubs look to reach a total agreement before the official opening of the transfer window.
