Manchester United Step Up Rafael Leão Pursuit As AC Milan Lower Asking Price

Manchester United have dispatched scouts to watch Rafael Leão as AC Milan reportedly lower their asking price to £52m for the Portuguese forward.

Manchester United have accelerated their interest in Rafael Leão with a fresh scouting mission, as AC Milan reportedly prepare to accept a cut-price fee of between €50m and €60m (£43m–£52m) for the 26-year-old forward. Representatives from Old Trafford attended San Siro on April 26 to monitor the Portuguese international during Milan's 0-0 draw with Juventus, a match in which the player was jeered by his own supporters. According to reports in Italy, United have already opened informal channels with Leão’s representatives to gauge the financial requirements of a summer move to the Premier League.

Milan Shift Stance on Leão Valuation

The reported €50m valuation marks a drastic departure from the €175m release clause previously protected by the Milan hierarchy. According to Calciomercato, the player is no longer viewed as untouchable at San Siro, largely due to a tactical misalignment under manager Max Allegri. Leão, a natural left-winger, has seen his productivity stifled while operating in the more central role required by Allegri’s 3-5-2 system. Despite the restrictive setup, he has managed 10 goals and 3 assists in 27 appearances this season. With his relationship with the fanbase deteriorating, a summer departure appears increasingly pragmatic for all parties as Milan look to reinvest funds elsewhere in the squad.

Carrick’s Squad Overhaul and Competition

United’s pursuit of Leão signals an ongoing restructuring of the forward line under Michael Carrick, following significant investment in Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko last summer. The potential move is further complicated by interest from Barcelona and Liverpool; the latter reportedly view Leão as a viable successor to Mohamed Salah. United may hold a structural advantage given Marcus Rashford’s current loan status at Barcelona, which could limit the Catalan club’s financial flexibility in a bidding war. At the proposed £52m ceiling, the deal would represent significant market value compared to Chelsea’s £107m outlay for Enzo Fernández or United's own £82m move for Antony, providing Carrick with a proven elite-level creator at a fraction of his 2024 market peak.

The next phase of negotiations is expected to centre on Leão's personal terms, while United continue to monitor whether Liverpool formalise their interest following the conclusion of the Premier League season.
