Manchester United Target €115M Sandro Tonali As Eduardo Camavinga Pursuit Stalls

Manchester United are pursuing a €115m deal for Newcastle's Sandro Tonali as Michael Carrick looks to rebuild his midfield for the Champions League.

Manchester United have identified Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as a primary summer target, with the Magpies reportedly demanding a fee of €115m (£96m) to sanction a sale. While Michael Carrick’s side has also been linked with Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, Newcastle are understood to have given the “green light” for Tonali's departure to help navigate Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) after failing to qualify for European football. United, having finished third in the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification, are now prioritising a midfield overhaul following the confirmed exit of Casemiro.

Newcastle's PSR pressure fuels Tonali and Hall interest

According to reports in Italy from Corriere della Sera and corroborated by The i Paper, Newcastle require significant sales by the June 30 accounting deadline. This has placed Tonali, the 26-year-old Italy international, at the centre of negotiations. United's interest extends to Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall, 21, who is reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford. Director Jason Wilcox is understood to be driving the pursuit of Hall to address United's long-standing instability at left-back, where Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia collective availability has remained low. Tonali’s €115m valuation would represent a significant profit on the £55m Newcastle paid AC Milan in 2023, providing the North East club with the necessary headroom to comply with financial regulations.

The reality of the Eduardo Camavinga rumours

Speculation regarding Eduardo Camavinga, 23, has intensified following his surprise omission from France’s 2026 World Cup squad. Reports from TEAMtalk suggest the midfielder is open to leaving Real Madrid due to restricted starting minutes. However, speaking via his regular transfer updates, Fabrizio Romano clarified that United have made no official approach. "Man Utd currently have different priorities," Romano noted, suggesting the Tonali deal is more advanced. While some reports suggested a £50m price tag for Camavinga, Real Madrid are unlikely to sell for less than €100m if they choose to listen to offers at all. With United needing to replace the defensive coverage lost by Casemiro’s departure, Tonali’s profile as a high-volume progressor and ball-winner currently aligns more closely with Carrick’s tactical requirements than Camavinga’s hybrid role.

United are expected to formalise their opening bid for Tonali in the coming weeks as they look to secure Carrick's squad ahead of their return to Europe's elite competition.
