Manchester United are expected to offer Michael Carrick the permanent manager’s role following the club’s qualification for the 2026/27 Champions League. According as first reported by The Guardian, the United board reached a decision after a 3-2 victory over Liverpool on May 3 mathematically secured a top-five finish. Carrick, 44, has operated as interim boss since the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January 2026, overseeing a dramatic rise from seventh in the table to Europe’s elite competition.
Champions League return and senior player backing
INEOS decision-makers, including Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, were reportedly convinced by two key metrics: the delivery of Champions League football and the overwhelming internal support for the interim manager. Under Carrick, United have secured 10 wins and two draws from 14 league matches, a sharp reversal from the Amorim era, where the points-per-game average reached a club-record low for the Premier League. Senior figures including captain Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, and Matheus Cunha have privately and publicly lobbied for the appointment. Speaking to reporters on May 4, Cunha described Carrick as having the "magic" of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, noting that he has the "full confidence of the group."
Tactical stability and coaching staff overhaul
The decision to appoint Carrick also reflects a pragmatism regarding the current managerial market, with preferred targets Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi currently tied to the England national team and Tottenham respectively. To support the 44-year-old, United are reportedly pursuing Bayern Munich assistant Aaron Danks to join as his No. 2, according to TEAMtalk. This move would see Carrick reunited with a trusted collaborator as he attempts to build on a defensive record that stabilized significantly after he took over a squad that had conceded more goals than any United side in 40 years during the first half of the campaign. Carrick previously managed Middlesbrough before returning to Old Trafford, and his familiarity with the club's structure is viewed by INEOS as a vital asset for long-term stability.
The club is expected to announce the formal contract details before the conclusion of the current Premier League season.
