Marcus Rashford Rejects Aston Villa Return To Prioritise Barcelona Move

Marcus Rashford has snubbed interest from Unai Emery’s Aston Villa as he seeks to turn his successful Barcelona loan into a permanent transfer.

Marcus Rashford has informed his representatives that he wants to remain at Barcelona on a permanent basis rather than return to the Premier League with Aston Villa. According to TeamTalk, the 28-year-old Manchester United forward has prioritised staying at the Nou Camp following a 2025/26 season in which he registered 14 goals and 14 assists while on loan. While Villa manager Unai Emery is reportedly pushing to sign Rashford after a successful short-term stint at Villa Park in early 2025, United prefer a permanent sale this summer to satisfy Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Barcelona financial hurdles and United’s exit stance

As first reported by The Independent, Barcelona currently hold a €30 million (£26 million) option to buy Rashford, yet the club remains hesitant to trigger the clause due to ongoing budget constraints. The Catalan side would reportedly prefer a second loan deal; however, the Manchester Evening News reports that the United hierarchy has already rejected this request. For United, selling Rashford represents pure profit on the balance sheet because of his homegrown status. Negotiating a permanent exit is viewed as essential for United to clear his significant wages and reinvest in the squad under Ruben Amorim—the manager who previously marginalised Rashford before his loan exits.

Tactical resurgence under Hansi Flick

Rashford’s value has resurged following his pivotal role in Barcelona’s La Liga title win, punctuated by a free-kick winner in El Clásico. Speaking to the media, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick praised the forward’s contribution, stating his season was "fantastic." Rashford himself addressed the uncertainty of the €30m option when speaking to The Independent: "I don't know if I will stay. I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay. To be a part of that would be special." This €30m figure is now viewed as a bargain compared to the £100m valuations the player commanded several seasons ago, highlighting the urgency for Barcelona to find fluid capital before the option expires or Villa intensify their pursuit.

Manchester United and Barcelona are scheduled to reopen formal negotiations next week to find a compromise before the transfer window opens.
