Michael Carrick Moves To Edge Of Permanent Manchester United Appointment

Michael Carrick is the clear favourite for the permanent Manchester United job after securing Champions League football and gaining the backing of the squad.

Manchester United have identified interim manager Michael Carrick, 44, as the leading candidate to take the permanent role this summer following a transformative five-month spell at Old Trafford. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club's hierarchy now internally believe Carrick is the favourite to succeed Ruben Amorim on a full-time basis, having mathematically secured qualification for the 2026-27 Champions League with a 3-2 victory over Liverpool on May 3.

Carrick’s impact and squad backing

Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January 2026, Carrick has overseen a significant upturn in performance, recording 10 wins and two draws from his first 14 matches. This run saw United climb from mid-table to third in the Premier League, providing the tactical stability that eluded his predecessor during a turbulent 14-month tenure. The INEOS-led sporting department is understood to be particularly impressed by the former midfielder's relationship with the dressing room. Speaking after the Liverpool win, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo emphasised the squad's commitment to the manager, stating that the players want to "die for him on the pitch" and follow his tactical direction.

The Iraola alternative and tactical fit

While Andoni Iraola, 43, emerged as a credible rival after confirming his departure from Bournemouth, United’s internal focus has shifted. Iraola's three-year stint on the south coast has been defined by high-intensity transitions and a likely European finish, but doubts persist regarding his transition to an elite club. Speaking on the Manchester Evening News podcast, Roy Keane questioned if Iraola had "done enough yet" to meet the title-winning expectations at Old Trafford. In contrast, Carrick’s prior experience as a first-team coach under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Sir Alex Ferguson offers the continuity the board craves. His current 71% win rate matches the elite standard required for a permanent appointment, making him the pragmatic choice over an external hire.

Club officials are expected to finalise the managerial structure before the 2025-26 season concludes to allow for early summer transfer planning.
