Newcastle United are monitoring Chelsea striker Liam Delap as a primary summer target following Bayern Munich’s decision not to exercise their €65 million purchase option for Nicolas Jackson. According to Ben Jacobs, the Magpies view Delap, 23, as a more attainable prospect than Jackson, who is set to return to Stamford Bridge after a €16.5 million season-long loan in Germany. While Delap maintains a desire to fight for his place in London, Newcastle's interest has intensified as they seek homegrown attacking depth to fill the void left by Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool.
Chelsea’s attacking surplus and squad constraints
The return of Jackson, 22, creates a significant logjam in Chelsea’s forward line. Despite signing a contract extension through 2033 just last year, the Senegal international failed to convince Bayern Munich to make his move permanent after they declined the buyout clause in April. Chelsea currently value Jackson at approximately £60 million, but his presence complicates the future of Delap. Having joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million in 2025, Delap has struggled for consistency, netting only three goals during a season where Joao Pedro cemented himself as the starting number nine. With Chelsea needing to adhere to Premier League Squad Cost Ratio rules, the club may be forced to sacrifice one of their young forwards to balance the books.
Newcastle and Ipswich lead chase for Delap
Newcastle’s pivot toward Delap reflects a strategic shift toward domestic talent following a period of heavy spending. Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, noted that if Newcastle were to "raid Chelsea for a striker," Delap is the more probable candidate over Jackson at this stage. However, the Magpies face competition from newly-promoted Ipswich Town. Following their return to the Premier League in May 2026, Ipswich are reportedly keen on a reunion with their former striker, potentially on a loan basis. Delap remains under contract until 2031, giving Chelsea significant leverage in negotiations, though the lack of a permanent manager following Liam Rosenior’s dismissal adds a layer of uncertainty to his long-term role in the squad.
The resolution of Chelsea's managerial search is expected to dictate whether Delap is granted a pre-season audition or made available for a permanent move to St James' Park.
