Rangers Initiate Fresh Approach For Josh Windass

Rangers manager Danny Röhl is pushing to re-sign Josh Windass from Wrexham, with the club opening talks regarding a return to Ibrox for the 32-year-old forward.

Rangers have opened discussions to re-sign Josh Windass from Wrexham, with manager Danny Röhl driving a move to bring the 32-year-old forward back to Ibrox. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Scottish Premiership side has made a fresh approach to discuss personal terms after a January enquiry was rebuffed by the Welsh club. While no official club-to-club negotiations have commenced, Röhl is understood to have identified Windass as a primary target to bolster an attack that struggled for consistency during a third-place finish in the 2025/26 campaign.

Röhl Reunites with Wrexham Standout

The pursuit of Windass is shaped by his previous relationship with Röhl at Sheffield Wednesday. Under the German coach, Windass flourished as a versatile attacking threat, a sentiment the player echoed when describing Röhl as "the best coach I've ever had by far" during his time at Hillsborough. This familiarity is central to Röhl’s attempt to implement a high-intensity system at Rangers, where tactical discipline and established chemistry are being prioritised to bridge the gap to Celtic. Windass remains under contract at Wrexham until 2028, having joined the Championship side on a free transfer in July 2025. Despite his age, his durability and output remain high, making him a pragmatic solution for a Rangers squad requiring immediate reliability.

Productive Season and Tactical Fit

Statistical evidence suggests Windass has maintained his peak form since leaving English football's second tier for Wrexham. During the 2025/26 season, he recorded 21 goal contributions (16 goals and 5 assists) in the Championship, earning Player of the Season honours as Wrexham narrowly missed out on the play-offs. His potential arrival at Ibrox mirrors Rangers' broader recruitment strategy, which includes a simultaneous pursuit of Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland. By targeting proven SPFL performers and former club employees—Windass scored 19 goals in 73 appearances during his first stint in Glasgow before a £2.5m move to Wigan in 2018—Röhl is looking to reduce the adaptation time usually required for new signings. Wrexham may prove difficult negotiators, however, given the player's four-year contract and his role as their offensive focal point.

Wrexham's stance on a valuation is expected to emerge once Rangers formalise their interest with a written bid.
