Real Madrid Management Concerned By Kylian Mbappe Leadership As Tactical Friction Grows

Real Madrid management reportedly doubt Kylian Mbappe's leadership qualities despite his 41-goal haul, as tactical friction with Vinicius Jr intensifies.

Real Madrid management reportedly believe Kylian Mbappe has failed to provide the leadership expected of him following a trophyless 2025/26 campaign. Despite scoring 41 goals in 41 appearances this season, the 27-year-old forward is the subject of internal scrutiny regarding his influence in the dressing room and his tactical compatibility with Vinicius Jr. According to reports from Cadena COPE, club officials now harbour doubts about Mbappe’s ability to serve as a figurehead for the team, with journalist Juanma Castaño stating that the Frenchman has not stepped up as a leader on or off the pitch.

Tactical friction and squad hierarchy

Internal reports via Madrid Universal suggest growing concern that Mbappe and Vinicius Jr are fundamentally incompatible within the same starting XI. Both players prefer to operate in the left half-space, leading to tactical congestion that has persisted through the tenures of both Xabi Alonso and interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa. This stylistic clash is compounded by wage hierarchy issues; Vinicius Jr’s contract renewal has reportedly stalled as he seeks parity with Mbappe’s earnings. While President Florentino Perez remains publicly supportive of the partnership, some members of the board are understood to be questioning the long-term viability of keeping both superstars. Former France international Emmanuel Petit, speaking to Cadena COPE, suggested the arrival of Mbappe has introduced a level of "selfishness" that has disrupted the previously cohesive dressing room environment.

Medical disputes and physical concerns

Beyond his social standing in the squad, Mbappe’s physical durability has become a point of contention. The forward has suffered 13 separate physical issues since joining as a free agent in 2024, a sharp increase from his relatively stable injury record at Paris Saint-Germain. This medical frustration culminated in Mbappe reportedly bypassing the club’s official medical staff to contact Florentino Perez directly, following a disagreement over the diagnosis of a recurring knee injury sustained in December 2025. Addressing the dip in collective performance after a 1-1 draw with Real Betis, Mbappe told Goal that "talent isn’t enough" and noted that players "can’t always deliver the show people expected" in the modern era of excessive match schedules. With the club eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich, the focus now turns to whether Perez will intervene to resolve the friction between his two most expensive assets.

The board must now decide if these growing pains are a temporary byproduct of a transitional season or proof of a structural flaw in the current squad build.
