Former Chelsea midfielder Ruud Gullit has advised the club to sign Casemiro (34) this summer to provide essential leadership for Moises Caicedo (24) following the Brazilian's confirmed departure from Manchester United. Casemiro will leave Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of the 2025/26 season, and Gullit believes his elite experience is the missing component in Chelsea's youthful midfield. While Caicedo recently committed his long-term future to Stamford Bridge with a contract extension until June 2033, the squad lacks a veteran defensive profile to balance its technical core.
Gullit highlights leadership gap at Chelsea
Speaking on his recent tactical analysis of the Premier League, Gullit suggested that Chelsea's recruitment strategy has left the squad top-heavy with potential but short on mentorship. "I need these players in midfield. I need this kind of experience alongside the young talent," Gullit stated, specifically mentioning the £115 million signing Moises Caicedo. "That's what Moises Caicedo needs — someone like Casemiro next to him to guide him." Despite criticisms during his second season at Manchester United, Casemiro has enjoyed a statistical resurgence in the 2025/26 campaign, recording nine goals and two assists in 34 appearances. This form has led manager Michael Carrick to praise his work ethic, noting that "it takes a lot of sacrifice" to sustain such a high level at his age.
Strategic fit and wage considerations
Chelsea’s interest in a veteran 'destroyer' would mark a shift from their recent policy of targeting players exclusively under the age of 25. The current midfield roster, including Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia, prioritises ball progression over the physical screening and defensive positioning Casemiro offers. However, any move would require a significant reduction in the Brazilian's wages; his current Manchester United salary is reportedly near £365,000-a-week, far exceeding Chelsea’s incentivised, lower-base wage structure. Manchester United, meanwhile, are already scouting replacements, with Atalanta’s Ederson identified as a primary target. For Chelsea, the appeal lies in securing a five-time Champions League winner for no transfer fee to protect their significant investment in Caicedo, whose tactical development remains a priority under the club's long-term project.
Casemiro is expected to make his final home appearance at Old Trafford against Nottingham Forest on 17 May before becoming a free agent.
