Sporting CP manager Rui Borges has described a potential transfer for Morten Hjulmand to Real Madrid as "completely natural", following reports that the Spanish giants are targeting the 26-year-old Danish international. Hjulmand, who serves as Sporting’s defensive midfield pivot, is protected by an €80 million release clause, though the Portuguese club reportedly hold a gentleman’s agreement to facilitate a move this summer for a fee closer to €50 million. The links to the Bernabéu coincide with speculation regarding Jose Mourinho’s potential return to Madrid to succeed Alvaro Arbeloa, with Hjulmand identified as a priority tactical reinforcement.
Borges endorses Madrid links
Speaking to the media regarding the speculation, Rui Borges validated the player’s readiness for elite-level competition. "I see it as completely natural, especially considering the player he is and the excellent seasons he’s had at Sporting," Borges said. The Sporting manager noted that interest from top-tier clubs is a testament to the club's development work, adding that it does not surprise him that Real Madrid would be discussing the midfielder. Hjulmand joined Sporting from Lecce in August 2023 for an initial €18 million and has since established himself as one of the most consistent performers in the Primeira Liga, ranking in the top percentiles for passing accuracy and defensive interventions throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
Strategic fit and the summer exit agreement
While Hjulmand’s contract technically requires an €80 million outlay to trigger a move, reports from Sports Mole suggest an agreement was reached in January to allow a departure this summer. Sporting blocked interest during the winter window to ensure the midfielder remained for their domestic title push, but are now understood to be open to negotiations. For Real Madrid, the pursuit indicates a continued desire to refresh a midfield that has seen significant transition since the retirement of Toni Kroos. Hjulmand offers a disciplined profile that would allow Madrid's more offensive-minded interior players greater freedom. The move would represent a significant profit for Sporting on a player who has seen his valuation more than double during his two-year tenure in Lisbon.
Negotiations are expected to intensify following the conclusion of the domestic season as Madrid finalises its coaching structure.
