Valentin Barco, the 21-year-old RC Strasbourg midfielder and former Brighton prospect, has officially announced his departure from the Ligue 1 club via social media ahead of a move to Chelsea. The Argentine is understood to have agreed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the transfer expected to be finalised following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. The deal marks another internal transaction within the BlueCo multi-club model, as both Chelsea and Strasbourg operate under the same ownership group.
Strategic shift and BlueCo internal movement
According to reports from TEAMtalk and Diario AS, the administrative framework for Barco’s move was established prior to the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea’s new head coach. Barco’s transition follows a established path within the BlueCo ecosystem, mirroring the movement of players such as Andrey Santos and Caleb Wiley. While the specific fee between the two sister clubs remains undisclosed, Brighton & Hove Albion are set to receive a financial boost via a sell-on clause. The Seagulls originally sold Barco to Strasbourg in July 2025 for a fee in the region of £8m after the player struggled for consistent minutes under Roberto De Zerbi during his initial stint in the Premier League.
From full-back to central playmaker
Barco’s profile has evolved significantly during his time in France. Primarily utilised as a left-back at Boca Juniors and Brighton, he was redeployed as a central playmaker at Strasbourg under Liam Rosenior. This tactical shift proved productive; Barco registered 3 goals and 11 assists in 58 appearances across his tenure in Ligue 1. Writing on Instagram, Barco stated: "Today, I must bid farewell to this club where I arrived full of enthusiasm... I've always given everything on the pitch in every match for this shirt." His arrival in West London provides Chelsea with technical depth in central areas, particularly vital as the club prepares for Potential personnel changes in midfield. Having played over 2,500 minutes in Ligue 1 this season, Barco joins Alonso’s squad as a match-fit option with top-flight European experience.
The transfer is expected to be formally processed when the summer window opens on July 1, aligning with the start of Alonso's tenure at the club.
