Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is reportedly considering a move to Galatasaray despite having one year left on his contract at Anfield. According to reports from TeamTalk and Turkish outlet FotoMac, the 34-year-old central defender’s representative travelled to Istanbul in mid-May to hold preliminary discussions with club officials following Galatasaray’s fixture against Antalyaspor. While the Super Lig champions have identified Van Dijk as their primary defensive target, the Liverpool Echo reports that the Premier League side has yet to receive any formal contact or official bid for the player.
Contractual hurdles and Galatasaray’s interest
Turkish journalist Cem Kinay claims Van Dijk has already expressed a desire to join the Istanbul giants, who are reportedly prioritising him over Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger. However, significant obstacles remain regarding the logistics of a transfer. Van Dijk signed a two-year extension in April 2025, tying him to Liverpool until June 2027. While reports in Turkey suggest the player might seek to terminate his current deal to facilitate a free transfer, such a development would be highly unconventional given his standing and remaining market value. To date, Liverpool have shown no public inclination to release their captain without a significant fee. Speaking to club media following a recent run of form, Van Dijk described the current campaign as "unacceptable" and "disappointing," though he has stopped short of publicly requesting a move.
Squad transition under Arne Slot
The timing of these negotiations coincides with a period of significant upheaval at Liverpool as Arne Slot manages the post-Klopp transition. Van Dijk remains essential to the first-team structure, having made 53 appearances this season—the highest among the club's defensive unit. His potential departure would create a leadership vacuum, particularly as senior figures Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have also faced scrutiny over their long-term futures. Liverpool have already begun contingency planning by integrating youth prospects Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet into the senior setup, but neither possesses the experience required to immediately replace Van Dijk. For Galatasaray, the pursuit represents a shift toward high-profile recruitment as they seek to cement their dominance in Europe, reportedly demanding a final decision before the 2026 World Cup.
