Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has asked the club’s hierarchy to monitor the situation of Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz, with a view to a potential move in 2027. According to reports from TEAMtalk, the 44-year-old manager has urged Stamford Bridge officials to keep a watching brief on the 23-year-old's progress at Anfield. There is currently no formal bid or active negotiation for the Germany international, who has struggled for consistency since his move to Merseyside in the summer of 2025. Alonso, who previously managed Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen, remains an admirer of the playmaker, though there is no immediate prospect of a transfer.
Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga Perspective
While Chelsea are reportedly tracking his progress, the midfielder has also been linked with other European sides. Bayern Munich have been cited as long-term admirers, though the reality of their current squad suggests a move is unlikely. Writing for Sky Germany, Lothar Matthaus assessed the potential for a move to Bavaria, stating: "At the moment, I honestly wouldn’t know where Wirtz would fit in, and I simply don’t see any realistic short-term possibility of bringing him to Bayern Munich." Matthaus suggested that if a departure from Liverpool were to become necessary, Chelsea might emerge as a more logical destination given the existing connection to Alonso, though he acknowledged that a switch to Stamford Bridge remains a complex proposition given the player's recent form.
Squad Realities and Recruitment Strategy
Chelsea’s current recruitment strategy presents a significant barrier to any deal for Wirtz. The club invested heavily in Morgan Rogers during the previous transfer window, signing the attacking midfielder for a fee of €138 million. Rogers has integrated quickly into the Chelsea squad, occupying the same tactical space as Wirtz, which limits the immediate necessity for further investment in that position. Furthermore, the club's internal priorities for the coming windows are reported to be focused on reinforcing deeper central midfield options rather than the attacking line. Given these competing squad requirements and the significant capital already committed to the current first-team squad, any pursuit of Wirtz remains purely speculative at this stage.
The Anfield Perspective and On-Field Performance
Wirtz’s time at Liverpool has been defined by intense scrutiny. Since joining the Reds for €125 million, the midfielder has registered 21 goal contributions in 59 appearances across all competitions, and has yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League this season. Despite enduring a difficult start to his Liverpool career, there is little evidence that the club are currently preparing to facilitate a sale. Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has consistently defended the midfielder’s contribution to the team amid sustained external criticism. Speaking to the media in October 2026, Iraola maintained his support for the player: "He helped the team a lot, in and out of possession, and I hope we can keep him there, no? You ask me basically every day about him, and we analyse and overscrutinise everything about him, but when he does well, also it is fair to say." Any movement on a transfer will likely depend on his form throughout the remainder of the 2026/27 season and the long-term objectives established by the Liverpool hierarchy.
